If you come into the store you will see our Staff Picks labeled clearly on the shelves. Tell us that you read about this author on our blog and you'll receive 20% off your book! Good for the month of January!!
Cindy's Pick: It is very hard for me to limit myself to only ONE author. I read so many.... A recent find I've really enjoyed is Brandilyn Collins. She writes mysteries; page turning suspense. Always a good "who done it." One can always count on her for twists and turns that you didn't count on. I have often "figured" it out only to be really off as the story unfolds. Brandilyn is quoted as saying this about her latest book Dark Pursuit, "To my loyal Seatbelt Suspense readers - you know the drill. Buckle in tight for this one. For you new readers-welcome to the ride. At the end you may be shaken-in soul as well as body. That was my intent." Check out Brandilyn Collins books here at The Lighthouse!
Debbie's Pick: Max Lucado! I love his writing because he's so...descriptive. You can almost feel, taste and see the scenes in his books. His words touch the depth of your soul. Amazing writer!Christian Book Preview has this to say, "People meet Max Lucado and rarely call him "Mr. Lucado." He's always just "Max." His readers feel like they have a friend in Max, a confidant, a companion on the journey of life. Read his books and you think you really know him. Max says his writing reflects who he is, an ordinary man pursuing an extraordinary God." Purchase your copies of Lucado's many books at The Lighthouse!
Ginny's Pick: I chose Ann Spangler. I have really enjoyed her unique yearlong devotional programs. Women of the Bible focused on the stories of 52 biblical women. Each week looks at a particular woman, and includes her story, background information about the culture of her day, a Bible study on her life, Bible promises that apply to her life, and help for praying in light of her story. One source says, "Ann writes in ways that reveal not just her intellectual curiosity but her desire for a deeper connection with God. By paying attention to the spiritual and emotional hungers that animate us and by finding creative ways to explore God’s self-revelation in Scripture, her writing surprises by revealing a God who is often far bigger and better than we might imagine." Purchase this and other books by Spangler at The Lighthouse.
Sally's Pick: My choice was easy. Joel Rosenberg. He is an outstanding author who has written both fiction and nonfiction, all based on Biblical prophecy and current events in the middle east. In my opinion he is a "must read." BOOKOPINION REVIEW stated; "The question often arises…is Joel Rosenberg, author of the popular Jihad” series, a modern day prophet? He says not. However, the uncanny resemblance between fiction and world events that explode ‘after’ the publication of his books, tends to make one consider the issue fairly seriously." Get Joel Rosenberg's books at The Lighthouse.
Shirley's Pick: I recommend the Louie Giglio DVDs entitled "How Great is our God" and "Indescribable". These titles can never describe adequately the God whom we serve, but the amazing photography of galaxies and worlds beyond our own, as shown in these DVDs, suggest to us an absolutely AWESOME GOD who is fully worthy of our worship!

Our friend and local author writes....

To all the book lovers out there, hello! My name is Christa Parrish, and I'm the author of Home Another Way (Bethany House, 2008). I'm also a "local" - living, working, and shopping in the Glens Falls/Queensbury area.

With all the wonderful books out there – I know; I love to read, too – I’m sure it’s difficult to choose! I do hope, however, if you decide to take a peek at Home Another Way, you will purchase it at The Lighthouse. I think it's very important to support local, independent businesses. When I buy local, I know I'm helping to provide a paycheck for my friends and neighbors, and I consider that being a good steward of the gifts God has given me.

Home Another Way, at its most basic, is a story of forgiveness – both God’s for us and ours for one another. But as we all know, forgiveness goes deeper than "I’m sorry." There is real pain and sacrifice involved, and secrets are often pulled toward the light.

No, Sarah Graham is not your typical Christian fiction protagonist. She’s prickly and rude and difficult to love, as those in the novel soon find out. Like many of the people we encounter on a day-to-day basis, Sarah’s brokenness goes deep, and isn’t remedied with a couple of Bible verses. The people of Jonah – Jack, Maggie, Beth, Memory, and others – aren’t perfect either; they get fed up with Sarah’s antics, they become discouraged, they have wrong reasons for their right actions. They also understand loving isn’t an option, but a command, and in their faithfulness are surprised to learn that they aren’t only there to help Sarah. Sarah has been put there to help them heal, too.

The tiny hamlet of Jonah isn’t a real place, but a composite of several towns nestled in the Adirondack Mountains, where gossip spreads like warm butter and, yes - as you know - some people honestly do still live in houses with dirt floors. Sarah, Jack, and the others aren’t based on real people, but I strive to write characters you won’t soon forget. Plus, the tough issues tackled in the novel can provide plenty of material for thought-provoking discussions. And if you purchase Home Another Way for your book club at The Lighthouse, please let the staff know - they will contact me, and I'd be more than happy to come visit with you group during one of your meetings.

May the Lord bless you and keep you during this Advent season, and all year long.
In Him,
Christa Parrish

Book Reviews

The Shack by William P Young. A grieving father receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him to meet in the Oregon wilderness where his daughter was abducted and murdered. Against his better judgment, Mack arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant, The Shack wrestles with the timeless question, "Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?" Have you read it? What do you think?

Operation Christmas Child Processing Center

Hello! This is Cindy. I just returned from the Processing Center in Charlotte, NC. While there we (100's of us) processed over 300,000 shoebox gifts. We had a celebration on Saturday, as we processed the millionth shoebox at Charlotte this season. Charlotte has the largest processing center for Operation Christmas Child in the US. They will process 1.8 million shoebox gifts to be sent out to over 110 countries. Our Northeast Region collected 250,949 shoeboxes! It was a privilege to be a part of bringing a "simple" gift to children around the world. A gift that shows them Jesus loves them. Please continue to pray for the children that will receive these gifts. Thank you. Here are some pictures to see what we did!
