Stories to teach Thanksgiving

Give Thanks to the Lord is a fun, rhyming take on Thanksgiving that will help kids truly understand the meaning of the holiday. In this heartwarming story that references Psalm 92, award-winning children’s author Karma Wilson tells a story about the Thanksgiving holiday that hits just the right tone. Told from the point of view of one young member of an extended family, Give Thanks to the Lord celebrates all the joys of the autumn holiday, from the arrival of distant relatives to a cozy house filled with noisy good cheer to apple cider and the delicious smells of roasting turkey and baking pies. And just when mouths are watering, the family sits down, holds hands, and says a prayer of thanks to God for “food and fun and family, all the wonderful things we see.” Young readers will delight in each tender rhyme as they learn to appreciate their own many blessings in this full-color picture book for kids.

Saying Grace tells the story of one girl and her discovery of the value of mealtime prayer at her family’s first Thanksgiving. Journey back in time with Grace and relive both the hardships and blessings along with her pioneer family. Find special mealtime prayers and Thanksgiving activities inside!

The Great Christmas Bowl

In a novella destined to become a holiday classic, The Great Christmas Bowl will have you laughing one minute and swallowing the lump in your throat the next. Susan May Warren has done it again. This time she’s captured all the mania and magic that is Christmas in this charming tale about Marianne Wallace, a woman in a small Minnesota town who just adores the holidays.Usually. This year is a little different. While Marianne’s caught up in preparing for a family Christmas that has to be perfect in every detail, her son’s football team has a shot at the state championship. So far so good—until the team’s mascot goes missing. And the church’s Christmas Tea needs organizing. Who better than Marianne to step in and save the day? Things start to unravel as Marianne realizes she’s in over her head. Then, one by one, her children tell her they can’t come home for Christmas. As her sparkling white Christmas turns to blue, can Marianne get the magic back?“I hope you enjoy reading [this story] as much as I enjoyed writing it,” Susan says, “and that it brings to you some of the flavor and magic of your childhood . . . and perhaps the delightful memories of Christmases with your family.” Susan invites readers to share a favorite Christmas story or family recipe on her blog at TheGreatChristmasbowl.blogspot.comThe Great Christmas Bowl is the perfect Christmas gift for anyone on your list who loves a funny, heartwarming story—and that includes yourself! Experience the Bible as never before

Goodbye to Gideon? That was the question that titled the Newsweek article about Glo, the new interactive New International Bible by Zondervan. In Lisa Miller's article in Newsweek she says, "Two men arrived in my office to show me their new product, a digital Bible called GLO (pronounced "glow"). Unlike other digital Bibles—which look, well, like Bibles—this one is cool with a capital C. Designed for people who prefer to read while they're watching TV and texting and downloading music, GLO is to the Bible what SimCity is to the comic book: an interactive scriptural immersion experience. Go to Exodus 25, for example. There, you can read, in the New International Version translation, the description of the Tabernacle the Hebrews built in the desert, where they sacrificed animals on altars to the Lord and, more importantly, where they stored in an ark the stone tablets upon which God had inscribed the Ten Commandments. Then click on a computer-generated image of the Tabernacle itself and things get really interesting. See the Tabernacle from the height of an airplane—Look! There's Mount Sinai! There are the tents of Aaron and Moses!—and then swoop down into it, cruise around, navigate through walls to the inner sanctum where the Ark of the Covenant rests. Penetrate its golden lid and view tablets themselves, written in proto-Canaanite letters, the way they must have looked (if you believe in these things) before they finally disappeared, mysteriously, forever."
Glo is available here at The Lighthouse and on our website at http://www.lighthousebooksource.com/ You can also see and experiment with Glo on their website, http://www.bibleglo.com/ Come in and see for yourself all that Glo can do! We'll be reviewing more in the days to come; so check back often.

A Parent's Guide to Family Devotions

: my faith
Quiet Time
Connect A Parent's Guide to Family Devotions
from mtl magazine

Keeping family devotions fresh and exciting is easier said than done. I believe most parents really desire to influence their children spiritually but simply do not know how. If given a realistic plan, families can establish personal spiritual habits that can serve as a foundation for family devotions. This process begins by helping every family member enhance his or her own personal walk with Christ. Talking about personal devotions when addressing family devotions may sound strange, but the two must be connected. Family devotions come alive when the parents and children can share how God is working in their lives individually.A dynamic tool that can be used for both personal and family devotions is the Word of Life Quiet Time devotionals for all ages. Each day when individual family members have a personal quiet time, they are preparing for family devotions. They will all read from the same Bible passage; however, the number of verses will vary according to age. The parent's Quiet Time has additional commentary to aid them in understanding and discussing the passage. Word of Life also publishes Quiet Time Connect, A Parent's Guide to Family Devotions, which provides parents with insights and ideas."Prayer is a strategic aspect of family devotions." Using the Quiet Time as a basis, here are some practical tips for family devotions: Choose the best time of day for your family, realizing that every family is different and has unique schedules. The ages of your children may determine if your devotions are in the morning or evening. The lengths of time spent in family devotions will depend upon the ages of your children. You might consider the following times if you are new to family devotions:Young Children — 5-10 minutes Teens — 10-20 minutes. Strive to make your time together fun. Begin by selecting two days a week for family devotions, and then add more days as you grow together. Variety in your family time is important. Prayer is a strategic aspect of family devotions. Creativity on the part of the parents will greatly increase the effectiveness of the family prayer time. I suggest that the parents do a little brainstorming for creative ideas relative to their family, but I have listed some ideas to get started: Establish a prayer focus for each night, such as a family member, your church, friends or missions. Pray for individual missionaries your family or church supports. Focus on a particular family member and a personal prayer request. Pray for the pastors and teachers in your church and schools. Pray for unsaved friends and family. Create a prayer bulletin board and post pictures of those for whom you are praying or handwritten requests from family members. (Make it portable for easy use.) Get out of the house and take a prayer walk with the family — take turns praying as you walk. If your children have cell phones, pray through the people in their phone contact list. Have you ever been with a group of people and did not know how to start a conversation? This has happened to most of us at one time or another. One parent told me that his greatest fear was how to begin their family devotions. He confessed that he just did not know what to say. To help alleviate that fear, let me share some discussion starters to consider: Use the two questions found in each day's Quiet Time: What is the writer saying in today's passage? How does this apply to my life? If you have devotions in the morning, how can you apply this today? If you have devotions in the evening, how did you apply this today? Ask about the characters in the passage (if applicable). Ask who is talking in the passage. Ask who the writer is addressing in the passage. Ask if the writer was happy or sad when he wrote this passage. Ask what the family learned about God from this passage. "With a little creativity, this can be an exciting time for families." The perception is that family devotions are boring. Perhaps this is often true, but it does not have to be the norm. With a little creativity, this can be an exciting time for families. Once again, using variety in family devotions can prevent them from becoming stale. For those parents who do not feel creative, here are a few ways to create enthusiasm: Draw a picture of the key thought in the passage (for younger children). Make a mosaic from different objects to illustrate the passage. Role-play the passage or key thought. Make up a song to illustrate the passage. Sing a song that goes with the passage. Use a "game show" format for discussion. Quiz each other about the passage. Print the verses on cards or poster paper, and put them on the wall. Write an encouraging card to someone, using a verse from the passage. Using a verse from the passage, send an encouraging text message to someone, and tell them the message is from your whole family. Watch a video together about the devotional topic. Take a family walk or hike and discuss the passage. Use props (such as homemade costumes). Have a missionary in your home to share their ministry. Put on a puppet show to illustrate the passage or truth. If you or a family member is involved in an online community or blog, share some observations from your family time. Getting our families into the Word of God and growing together spiritually should be one of our major goals. The Word of Life Quiet Time devotional for all ages provides the perfect materials for both individual and family worship. Available here at The Lighthouse.

Live Fast Die Young

"Live Fast Die Young" is the name of a DVD that will soon be here at The Lighthouse! This film is receiving rave reviews...'This film lives up to its title and leaves the viewer reflecting on the "point of life" and how faith fits in and provides perspective and hope.' - Pastor Roger Bosch, Lake Avenue Church. "It was a very moving film. Especially the ending. Better than 'Fireproof' (another Christian film)" says a viewer at Alive Music Fest. "Congratulations! It encourages me to know there are Christians in the vineyard with such high standards of quality." - Philip Yancy, Best-selling author

Story: At an exclusive Hollywood party on Christmas Eve, an A-list star dies of an apparent overdose. A detective holds a protesting core group of Hollywood insiders for questioning. The group, consisting of an A-list director, a top agent, a movie star, a media mogul, a writer, a wannabe actress, a studio head, and others, begin a deep and profound discussion on the meaning of life, including the existence of God.

As an added support to our local churches we have been able to provide you with "licensing rights" to show this publicly, simply by purchasing the DVD here at The Lighthouse! You can show it to your church, youth group, cell groups, Bible studies, etc. For more information visit http://www.livefreedieyoungmovie.com/

The style and unique humor of C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters are retained in this full-cast audio dramatization. The story is carried by the veteran demon Screwtape (starring Andy Serkis, “Gollum” from The Lord of the Rings films), whose letters to his nephew and protégé, Wormwood, instruct the demon-in-training in the finer points of leading a new Christian astray. Lewis's satire is a Christian classic.

Features:
—Stars Andy Serkis, Geoffrey Palmer (Tomorrow Never Dies), Laura Michelle Kelly (Sweeney Todd), Eileen Page (The Secret Garden), and other world-class actors
—Features Douglas Gresham—stepson of C.S. Lewis and co-producer of the Narnia films—as host
—Includes over 4 hours of audio entertainment, plus a behind-the-scenes DVD documentary with actor interviews and more
—From the award-winning audio drama team that brought you Radio Theatre’s Amazing Grace and The Chronicles of Narnia

Starting their day on the right track

It's hard to believe it is almost time for the kids to go back to school. Some of my favorite memories growing up was the time spent with Mom in the morning. She'd gather us together for a simple devotional and pray for us before school. As the youngest I had the privilege of more years with Mom alone in the morning. Here are some great product suggestions to start your day focused on Jesus...
MY READ AND RHYME STORY BIBLE
This Bible Storybook combines fun rhythm and rhyme with a learn-to-read format to help students learn about God’s Word while they learn to read. Young readers will enjoy the lively text and rhythm as well as the stories and engaging art.
An excerpt from The One Year Devotional for Kids
Serve Jesus, Not Things
"Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will also be." Matthew 6:21
How about you? Are you unhappy because of the bikes or games your friends have that you don't have? Those things are nice, but the really important and lasting treasures are available to you, too. It's only what you do for Jesus that's going to last forever."
The One Year Every Day Devotions
Each devotion encourages tweens to build a personal, active faith based on the core beliefs of the Bible and the Christian faith. Each day's reading combines insights, NLT Scripture verses, and statements of Christian belief, creative applications, and prayer suggestions. Previously published as Young Believer 365.
These and many more are available here at The Lighthouse

Christianfictionreview.com rated Embrace Me as their Best of 2008, stating, "As is usual with her books, Samson challenges us to live out our faith in ways that "traditional Christianity" may not often imagine. There's more to the Christian life than going to church and listening to the preacher. Powerfully moving, Embrace Me is a beautiful story of redemption and becoming the Body of Christ. Highly Recommended."

Nothing But Trouble

"A lovable heroine, crackling dialogue, magnetic romance, a splash of slapstick and an adventure full of relationships that intersect the past and the present. I loved getting in and out of trouble with P. J. Sugar, and can’t wait for the next installment!” Sharon Hinck, author of Symphony of Secrets. This first novel in the new, high-energy P. J. Sugar series will make you fall in love with its bad-girl-turned-good, a former teenage troublemaker who’s had a change of heart and returns to her hometown in search of a fresh start. When one of P. J.’s former teachers is murdered and her best friend’s husband is falsely accused of the crime, P. J. springs into action to clear his name, even though the detective assigned the case—not incidentally P. J.’s high-school boyfriend and quite a troublemaker himself—doesn’t appreciate her involvement. In her search for clues, P. J. digs up long-hidden secrets and a bigger story than anyone ever expected. This is romantic comedy laced with suspense: a winning combination.Nothing But Trouble is set in Minnesota, the home state of author Susan May Warren, where she her family have resettled after serving as missionaries in Russia for several years. Now a full-time writer, wife, and mom of four, Susan says, “Come and join me on the fun, romance, and suspense of lovable P. J. Sugar!” Read more about this and other new fiction releases at www.Tyndale.com

“While I’m Waiting” is a great song on John Waller’s first album. The heartfelt worship anthem became a hit when it was featured in the DVD FIREPROOF. Now, While I’m Waiting is the name of the second album from John. This CD releases on April 7. In addition to the original version of the song, the new album also features “While I’m Waiting/FIREPROOF Remix.” With clips from the movie spliced into the song, the remix is starting to get airplay on Christian radio stations. If you haven’t heard it on your favorite station, be sure to call or email them to ask them to play it. And please stop in at The Lighthouse and purchase your CD "While I'm Waiting" by John Waller

Above the Line: Take One

The newest book from Karen Kingsbury, Above the Line: Take One. It sounds really good! (I'm currently reading it so I'll add my two cents another time.- Cindy) Here is the description: In the high-powered world of filmmaking, two unknown producers struggle to make a name for themselves. With millions of investors dollars on the line, everything starts to fall apart and they realize they may be in over their heads. Is it possible to keep things above the line, to beat the odds and make a movie unlike anything ever done before? Or, will they lose everything in the process? Read it and let us know what you think!

Come What May

I just watched the DVD "Come What May" last night. I was critiquing it for both the quality and the content. As a group of homeschoolers attempting their first movie, it was not an easy topic to tackle. At times the angles and camera shots were a little off, but that got better as the movie progressed. I also felt that way about the acting. Their characters became more realistic as they went along. I was impressed with a few things: 1-honestly tackling the issue of when live begins. 2-admitting that even as Christians we struggle to do what is right, when the outcome is not clearly in our favor. 3-showing that even in marriages and families you don't always agree, but love is forever. 4-purity was exemplified and explained in a way that didn't seem archaic and prudish, but beautiful and desirable. Personally I thought the message was clear and needed in our culture today. Each person is a gift to be cherished, from the moment of conception on. Do the right thing. Come what may! Watch "Come What May" and tell me what you think! -Cindy

CD Review: New Group REVIVE

CD "Revive: Chorus of the Saints" available at The Lighthouse
The band Revive officially got together in the (Australian) summer of 2004, after playing local churches and schools for the better part of 2003. They had been having a lot of fun doing these smaller shows, but began seeing that perhaps there was something more to this band than they had originally thought. In July 2004, they released their first full album as Revive titled Where I Belong. With more offers coming in, it was getting difficult to balance work/university with the band commitments, so in January 2006, the boys took the leap of faith and went full time Revive! It is often said that God uses those willing to be used – and they quickly found out that this was indeed true for them. Mac Powell (Third Day) produced the debut release Chorus Of The Saints, coming out March 10, 2009. Through its music, Revive is about ministry and reminding people of the message in Psalm 85. “It says, ‘He will revive their hearts.’ We love that,” says lead singer Dave Hanbury. “We want people to be refreshed, like what our name means, to be revived. It would be great if someone would listen to “Chorus of the Saints”, and feel like they could walk closer with the Lord.”The album starts with the first single and title song “Chorus Of The Saints” which is about God’s faithfulness and opening our eyes to the beauty of God .“This is the chorus of the saints singing Hallelujah our God is faithful”. The album flows nicely into the next two songs “Can’t Change Yesterday” and “The Truth Is” that both feature a gentle reminder and rebuke “But the Truth is”, a biblical phrase used by Jesus: “I tell you the truth”. Both songs are about finding our peace and hope and trust to God. The song “You Know”, sung with Mac Powell, is my favorite song on the album. The song is based on Matthew 6:25 and is a wonderful prayer to God that we don’t need to worry, God knows and loves us. “There is nothing in my life You haven’t known”.The message of all of the songs are hope-filled and are catchy, uplifting and biblical. Another theme in the songs “Don’t Look Anywhere Else” and “You’re All I Need”, is that both are about finding meaning, life and peace in our relationship with God. I like every single song on the album and the closer “Promise of Tomorrow” is a great alternative rock style song with a cool vibe and style that reminded me of After Edmund, one of my favorite new bands. Closing Thoughts:This is my favorite new album of the year from a great new band that I expect to be nominated for Best New Artist. If you like Rush of Fools and Tenth Avenue North, then you’ll enjoy Revive. Review by Kevin Davis of Christian Music Review

And we trust Him for the resources we need to make this a success.”

New book review! The Love Dare by Alex & Stephen Kendrick
Reviewed by Deena Peterson on TitleTrakk.com
"The Love Dare shoves the business aside and brings Christ back to the focus..."
Not all of you have seen the movie Fireproof, but I have this uncanny notion that you HAVE heard about a small book, featured in the film, that's sweeping churches across the nation.
I'm here to let you know--it's WORTH the hype! "The Love Dare" is a project created by brothers Stephen and Alex Kendrick, the creators of "Flywheel", "Facing the Giants", and "Fireproof".
In the movie, Caleb receives a journal from his father, called The Love Dare. In it, Caleb is challenged to love his wife for the next 40 days, following the Biblically based counsel on each day in the book.
The interest was so high in such a book, the Kendrick brothers found themselves creating a book about a fictional element in the movie! What came from that interest is a devotional book that can revolutionize any marriage if the two involved will allow it.
Each day has a devotional reading, then an assignment. The tasks range from restraining from any negative comments for a day, to doing something for your spouse that says "I was thinking of you today".
Nothing in this book is extraordinary...it's merely practical teaching on how we should live as husbands and wives according to Scripture. The Kendrick brothers cite Scripture on each day, and I found it to be sound and wise counsel.
"The Love Dare" has the look and feel of a journal handed down from generation to generation, just like we see in the movie. I'm excited about the potential of this book, as used by God's Spirit, to change marriages in our churches today. No matter how good your marriage is, can't it always grow to be better? I have a fantastic marriage, but my husband and I are busy people. "The Love Dare" shoves the business aside and brings Christ back to the focus, which in turn helps us love one another better.
I highly recommend this unique and valuable resource to spouses, couples, ministry groups, and pastors. I'm giving "The Love Dare" the golden bookmark, with a golden heart as a charm."
Get your copy today at The Lighthouse, on sale, for only $11.00. Begin it tomorrow...and watch as God changes your marriage into what He's wanted it to be all along.

Come What May

We are getting excited about this DVD. It really looks interesting. The heart of the movie is about the sanctity of life. This film will challenge viewers to look at the question, "When does life really begin?" The Biblical answer is obvious; Psalm 139:13-16. Is the legal? Watch the trailer. Begin to think about the message this DVD is trying to deliver, and who you might touch with it. Be watching for the DVD to release later this month!

Book Review

What In the World Is Going On?: 10 Prophetic Clues You Cannot Afford to Ignore:
by Dr. David Jeremiah
Is the current economic and political crisis actually prophesied in the Bible? If so, what are we to do about it? It is hard to piece together all this information in a way that gives a comprehensive picture of what the end times will look like. That's why so many theories abound. And that's why Dr. David Jeremiah has written What In the World Is Going On?, a unique book that cuts through the hundreds of books and numerous theories to identify the essential 10 most important bible prophecies. There is no other book like this. You'll find it the ultimate study tool for understanding the future. You'll have a greater sense of comfort that, even in these crazy times, God is indeed in control. If bible prophecy has always been a mystery to you, Dr. Jeremiah's book will help you solve the mystery. At last, bible prophecy can make sense, and make a difference. It's never been more important. What In the World Is Going On? is shocking and eye-opening but essential reading in these turbulent days.

Brings bible prophecy to light on:
- The oil crisis
- The resurgence of Russia
- The new axis of evil
- The importance of Israel
- The new powers of the European Union
